Flooding brought about by Typhoon Ondoy 2009 |
It is why a community-based disaster risk reduction and management plan (CBDRRMP) is essential. It places the responsibility of being prepared for calamities and other emergencies on the community as a whole, ensuring that organizations, households and individuals can work together in making their community more resilient in the face of disaster. CBDRRMP is important, especially for countries highly vulnerable to disasters, such as the Philippines. Situated within the Pacific Ring of Fire and typhoon belt, the Philippines is frequented by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and typhoons respectively. The country ranked 9th in the world in terms of vulnerability to calamities in the 2020 World Risk Index.
One of the most common events experienced by the Philippines is flooding which underscores the importance of effective floodwater management. There are many ways that local government units are doing this. Efforts range from structural measures such as sizeable underground drainage systems, floodways, pumping stations, flood warning systems, and urban greening to non-structural measures such as minimizing plastic waste, a primary culprit in urban flooding. With the country situated on five active fault lines, Filipinos must also prepare for earthquakes. It is why many buildings are equipped with earthquake-resistance features. Taking earthquake resilience in the country further are the periodic earthquake drills implemented at the national and organizational levels.
These are good examples of effective CBDRR, where both the authorities and the citizens work together to ensure the safety of life and property in their communities.
SM City Masinag has a rainwater collection tank that can store 17,681 cubic meters of water. |
As a trusted and responsible developer of integrated properties, SM has always been committed to promoting Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) in its communities, which is evident in many of its malls that employ infrastructure design centered on disaster resilience. SM allocates 10 percent of its capital expenditures to incorporate disaster-resilient features, of which installing water management design features is one of them.
Artist’s illustration of SM’s rainwater collection facility in 22 SM Malls nationwide. |
A few examples of these are SM City Marikina, elevated by several rows of concrete stilts to protect tenants and mall-goers during extreme floods. SM Mall of Asia was built with a storm surge barrier for added protection during storm surges, and several malls employ catchment tanks for recycling rainwater.
Across the country, there are 22 SM Malls that have rainwater collection tanks under the mall. All these malls combined can catch and store 79,880 cubic meters of rainwater, equivalent to 32 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
SM City Olongapo Central’s rainwater collection tank can hold up to 14,580 cubic meters of water. |
Supporting these are several initiatives focused capacity-building for its stakeholders. It includes workshops & learning sessions on disaster risk resilience management and regular participation in the quarterly national simultaneous earthquake drills for its employees, and the annual Emergency Preparedness Forum for persons with disabilities and the elderly, two of the most vulnerable sectors of society during disasters.
SM City San Mateo’s rainwater collection tank can collect 10,800 cubic meters of potential floodwater. |

Real estate company Federal Land, Inc. is on track with its 2022 targets with new properties that are seen to help drive socio-economic activity in Marikina, Manila, and the Manila Bay Area in Pasay City.
“We are optimistic that the sector will see a significant rebound this year. This is the reason we remain aggressive in introducing new properties in key areas in the metro. As more people resume their previous routines, we shall provide them with living options that will fit their needs and respond to their demand for a holistic, sustainable lifestyle,” Federal Land, Inc. sales group head Margarita Saenz-Resurreccion said.
This position supports the findings of the recently released Colliers Property Market Report, which listed “improvement in consumer and business confidence” as among the key market enablers for the sector.
The report, released on February 9, mentioned the overall Metro Manila vacancy rate is expected to go down to 16.2% by the end of 2022, from 17.9% in 2021. “This points out to a healthy supply pipeline,” it said.
Colliers also sees gradual recovery in rents and prices and expects an increase of 1.7% and 1.5%, respectively, as demand grows. It also cited data from the BSP’s latest Residential Real Estate Price Index (RREPI) report showing nationwide home prices increased by 6.3% YOY in Q3 2021 due to stronger consumer demand for residential property.
The group also encouraged residential developers to “continue lining up projects, both condominium and house & lots, in line with the anticipated recovery of the economy and as more professionals return to traditional offices located in central business districts.”
New developments
Federal Land is set to launch new residential towers in Marikina with Siena Towers, Manila with Quantum Residences, and in the Manila Bay Area with Mi Casa.
“All these developments are strategically located in areas with various commercial and lifestyle choices, with nearby schools, hospitals, and major thoroughfares. They feature a wide range of amenities and access to the outdoor space that allow residents to lead an active, well-balanced life,” Resurreccion said.
Located along Sumulong Highway in Marikina City, Siena Towers is a modern take on the town of Siena, Italy, where rural charm and progress abound. It is an ideal option for those looking for an upgraded suburban living and access to modern conveniences at a reasonable price.
For its latest residential property in Taft Avenue, Manila, Federal Land’s Quantum Residences is among the company’s real estate developments that are seeing high demand from property buyers, both here and abroad.
The three-tower mixed-use condominium is designed to fit the modern lifestyle. It is fiber optic ready, so everyone in the family is assured of fast and reliable connectivity for work, learning, and entertainment.
Mi Casa, on the other hand, is an upcoming vertical residence located within the Central Business Park island of Manila Bay Area designed for contemporary Filipino living. It is a tropical-inspired residence nestled in the middle of a thriving community which makes an ideal home for executives and business owners who live a fast-paced life but aspire to go home to a quieter place that allows for relaxation and repose.
“Overall, these properties are good investment options for those looking for a place to live, rent out, sell, or unwind,” Resurreccion concluded.

The heart-warming ballad serves as his first official single as a signed artist under Sony Music Philippines
Filipino singer-songwriter EJ De Perio defies the concept of perpetuity on “Panandalian,” his first official single under Sony Music Philippines.
Brimming with laid-back, acoustic guitars and minimal instrumentation, the heartfelt ballad asserts his sentiment that despite the uncertainty of the future, there will always be that one person who is willing to stick out with you through thick and thin.
“I wrote Panandalian out of the realization that nothing’s gonna last forever, and everything must come to an end,” says the talented newcomer. “The song is about preparing yourself for the inevitable change, and making sure to protect that one person who is willing to keep things the same way—even if everything around you is constantly evolving.”
The stripped-down track is produced by fellow singer-songwriter Migz Haleco, who honed EJ De Perio’s folk-pop sound with mellow sensibilities.
“I’m really glad that Migz helped me find the sound that fits my vision,” De Perio shares. “With Migz, it’s always a collaborative process. I provide input, and he executes it well.”
The release of “Panandalian” comes with a poignant music video helmed by young filmmaker Ivan Pasia. The MV, which stars young actor Francis Magundayao, conveys the message of the song with riveting earnestness, keenly aware of its commitment to power through despite life taking us on a bumpy ride.
A few months ago, EJ De Perio teased the streaming public with “BUNTONG HININGA” under WATERWALK Records. The guitar-pop ballad documents a conversation between him and God in one of his dreams. He also recently signed with Sony Music Philippines, and is planning to release thematically binding songs about “unspoken emotions.”
“I’ve been an independent singer-songwriter for 5 years and I didn’t see this coming,” De Perio shares in a statement. “I’m just glad that the Sony Music Philippines really believed in what I do and what I write. In return, I’m determined to use my platform to inspire more people through music. This is a gift that I hope to continue doing for more years to come.”
EJ De Perio’s “Panandalian” is out now on all digital music platforms worldwide via Sony Music Philippines. Watch the music video here.

The new single is inspired by the power ballads of the ‘80s and ‘90s
Filipino alternative rock outfit Sponge Cola addresses the truth about regret and longing on their heart-wrenching single “Laman Ng Panaginip”—released via Sony Music Philippines.
Redefining love songs with reckless abandon, the Filipino quartet expresses the complexity of impossible choices in a world that is grounded in the familiar and often neglected reality of prioritizing practicality first before anything else, including love.
“This idea is mentioned concretely in the song almost as blunt exposition,” lead vocalist and guitarist Yael Yuzon stresses. “I really wanted the listener to feel that slab of reality to the face as opposed to something vague and symbolic. No figures of speech here; just feel it and let it all out. It’s the type of material that deserves to be sung out loud in the videoke over drinks with our friends and family for some kind of release.”
According to Yuzon, the song is about a love that never was. “The courage and reckless abandon that goes with singing a power ballad oftentimes come from a place of regret.”
In terms of sonic approach and arrangement, “Laman Ng Panaginip” is inspired by the power ballad movement of the ‘80s and early ‘90s. With guidance from producer Joey Santos of Love One Another Studios, the track delivers another high point in the band’s career with indelible catchiness and impressive musical chops to back it up.
“It's a direct reference to a specific genre and time period that had a very influential impact in our formative years,” guitarist Armo Armovit shares in a statement. “It was recorded in Love One Another with producer Joey Santos making sure each layer of production had meaning and told the story.”
The song’s release is accompanied by an arresting visual helmed by filmmaker Ken Tan. Referencing Armovit, the MV director “did an excellent job in conveying the dream vs reality theme with the most minimal of elements.” The Sponge Cola’s resident guitarist adds, “The dancer, Ysabel Lava, delivered a captivating and emotionally charged performance with every move she choreographed herself.”
“Laman Ng Panaginip” is the fifth single released off their upcoming new album, CLASSIC—to be released sometime this year. The new record will serve as the band’s eighth full-length album, following a string of multiplatinum and critically acclaimed hits that span for more than two decades.
