MANILA, February 28, 2017. The internationally acclaimed Global Peace Convention opens today at Marriott Convention Center in Pasay City, to run from February 28 to March 3.Thousands of stakeholders from business, interfaith, civil society, academe, and the government sector will be collaborating on peace and development strategies based on the theme, "Moral and Innovative Leadership: New Models for Peace and Development.”
The Global Peace Convention is the preeminent, world-level platform to share best practices and advance innovative values-based approaches to resolve conflict and underdevelopment. It was launched in Manila in 2009 and has been organized annually in five different countries before its return to the Philippines this year. The Convention is organized by the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), a leading international, non-profit organization that promotes a values-based approach to building sustainable peace and development at the community, national and regional level.
“At Global Peace Foundation, we believe a shared future is within our reach, and that our shared identity and common aspirations as members of the human family establish the basis for sustainable peace,” said, James P. Flynn, International President, Global Peace Foundation.
A combination of plenary and concurrent sessions will provide a global platform for all peace-loving stakeholders to discuss critical problems and develop pioneering projects, initiatives and policies impacting the youth, women, government, and the private business sector.
Flynn says, “Through these conventions, we strive to find the deeper basis of our interconnectedness, and to more deeply understand the meaning and application of “unity in diversity.”
During the four-day convention, participants will focus on how peace and development efforts can influence the direction of six thematic tracks, namely, Youth Leadership and Service; Transforming Education; Interfaith Peace-building; Women's Leadership Culture; Global Peace Economic and Business Forum; and Korean Unification.
On today’s plenary session, former Philippine president H.E. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will lead honored guests that also include H.E. Vinicio Cerezo, former president of Guatemala; Hon. Jin Pyo Kim, former deputy prime minister of strategy and finance of Korea; Prof. Dr. Madhav Das Nalapat, director, geopolitics & international relations of India’s Manipal University, The Heritage Foundation founder Dr. Edwin J. Feulner, founder of; and The Global Peace Foundation chair Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon.
A major highlight of the four-day convention is the 2017 Global Peace Awards which pays tribute to exemplary government, civil society and faith leaders whose commitment to achieving peace and development has significantly improved the lives of others.
This year’s honorees are: Nigerian Islamic Clerics Rev. John Joseph Hayab and Sheikh Hailru Abdullahi Maraya for interfaith awards; Higher education commissioner Dr. Nona S. Ricafort for family advocacy; UN social affairs officer Dr Marco E. Roncarati for service; former
president of Panama H. E. Nicolas Ardito Barletta Vallarino, Ph. D. for governance; Heritage
Foundation founder Dr. Edwin J. Fuelner for scholarship; Global Citizenship Initiatives vicepresident
Ms. Diane Melley for philanthropy; and Korean music composer Kim Hyung Suk
for culture.
On the evening of the third day, March 2, One Dream One Korea campaign will reel off in a
star-studded One K pop concert at the MOA Arena. The One K global campaign, launched
in 2015, is part of a popular movement for Korean unification and contributes to a larger
effort to advance regional peace and global security.
On the final day of Convention, the 2017 Global Youth Summit will draw thousands of
inspired young delegates to Manila to participate in workshops that address issues affecting
the youth like technology, environment, public policy advocacy and education. The Summit
will provide a space for the youth develop a leadership skills set that is globally-oriented and
innovative.
Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon, chair, The Global Peace Foundation, says, “We have reached
an inflection point in history where the circumstances today are ripe for a paradigm shift of
major proportions that could positively or negatively affect this century. I feel the urgency for
a new generation of global leaders to make their mark in history.
“By moral and innovative leadership, I mean it has to promote a ‘greater good’ that can

mankind’s natural creative need to develop and improve the human condition. Surmounting
the religious, societal and legal constraints of their time, innovators have brought greater
advances and freedoms to the modern world.”
